My love story with Jimmy Eat World began back in 7th or 8th grade. I can’t remember the exact details. My best friend growing up – Kayla – and I bonded over our teenage angst and the vast supply of music that caters to all of those emotions. Of course, this is where Jimmy Eat World came in. I remember seeing the band for the first time in Foxboro, MA when they opened up for Green Day, so I had pretty high expectations for this show.
Shout out to WFPK for the chance to see them up close for the Friday afternoon member’s only show! Even though downtown traffic & school dismissal made the 3:00 start time a little difficult, it was fantastic to see the no frills set. Later that night, Jim Adkins and the boys showed up to Mercury Ballroom with high energy to please the crowd. Apparently it’s been over 5 years since they’ve been to Louisville, so I think most of the folks were highly anticipating the band’s reappearance. I’ll be honest, I haven’t kept up with Jimmy Eat World’s newer stuff (more of a Jimmy Eat World + Bleed American + Futures kind of girl, though I’ve dabbled somewhat in their newer albums occasionally) but they meshed the new and the old well throughout the set, hitting pretty much all of the staples that I wanted to hear. Overall, I give the show a double thumbs up – well worth the 10+ year wait that I endured. And I’m thinking I need to update my iTunes, and include some more of the Arizona band’s more recent tunes.
