Since we saw him at the beginning of 2014 for a sold out Headliners show, we haven’t been able to get Jason Isbell out of our heads. He’s got a bit more of a country sound than we’re normally attracted to, but his songs are real and his voice is so soothing that we have been in love. I was able to see him perform with Shovels & Rope this New Years Eve at the Palace, and it was a great night. It was much calmer than NYEs I’ve had in the past few years, with the crowd staying seated for most of the show, but that was fine with me. Shovels & Rope opened up the show, switching between musical instruments several times. Jason and crew took over afterward until just before midnight, and then they reappeared for the countdown and a played a couple more higher energy songs to round out the night. One of my favorites of the night was when Jason and fiddler Amanda Shires, his wife, played a few duets, including “Traveling Alone.” They also shared a precious moment after the show celebrating the beginning of 2015.
Jason, Louisville has been as obsessed with your music as we have been. Headliners, Forecastle, The Palace… I think we speak for the city when we say that we hope you’re back soon.
