Yet another band that we were first introduced to at ROMP! (Although I think I may have heard of them from attending Merlefest earlier that year.. not sure though). They’ve switched out members almost every time we’ve seen them, but I have never been disappointed by a performance from the Carolina Chocolate Drops, and I always leave wanting to come back for more. While we were only able to catch them for one of their two nights in Louisville, the vibe at the Clifton Center was that people were loving them. The audience ranged from a group of Central/Seneca high schoolers to the older white guy who clogged on stage alongside Rhiannon Giddens during the last number. I loved that they played some of their classics, including Ruby, Cornbread & Butterbeans, Hit ‘Em Up Style, and that amazing Gaelic tune; but I really enjoyed the preview of some of their newer tunes, as they’re adding a few more instruments to their next tour. My only criticism of the show would be that they’re a band I want to dance along with the entire time (the dance tent at Greyfox was perfect for that), but the venue wasn’t set up for that. I guess once again, I’m leaving them wanting to do it all again.
