It is Shaky Knees time!! This festival has become part of our end of the school year tradition, making this our third consecutive trip. We always have a lot of fun getting out of town for a weekend vacation and SK is the perfect excuse. The caliber of this Atlanta fest has not only increased over its four year existence but has garnered tons of attention for the indie/alt rock that takes their five stages over the weekend.
Louisville is well represented on this year’s lineup- My Morning Jacket (Saturday’s headliner), Houndmouth (Sunday), Murder By Death (Sunday) and Twin Limb (Satuday) all appear on the lineup. Applause.
We’ve got quite the weekend ahead of us trying to catch some of our favorites as well as seeing some hot, new names. I expect we’ll be trekking across this year’s massive grounds A LOT- my feet hurt already.
Friday
You’ll be able to see this Icelandic band at July’s Waterfront Wednesday. They’ve got a certain moodiness to them that renders emotional responses with ease.
The Struts- Boulevard @ 6:15pm
GLAM. Originally from the UK, The Struts absolutely have a soul meant for another time and place. They music and personas are simultaneously grimey, sexy, and purposefully polished. AKA rock and roll perfection.
I predict lots of inappropriately dressed children at this set. Nevertheless, I find The 1975 catchy and just easy to listen to. A Friday night with no real thoughts is exactly what I need.
Saturday
Polyenso- Buford Highway @ 12:30pm
Hopefully we can recover and get moving early enough for this one. Polyenso is something funky and we all know I love weird combos of indie, hip-hop, jazz and other goodies.
Phosphorescent- Ponce de Leon @ 5:45pm
Phosphorescent has been on our must see list for a bit, missing them for some reason whenever he has been in Louisville. Matthew Houck will be back to Louisville for Forecastle but we’re gonna try and catch his Americana, gritty set in ATL.
Silversun Pickups- Piedmont @ 7:15pm
Brian Aubert’s voice just speaks to me.
I’m not entirely sure how we are going to choose between these early evening sets. This poppy, sensual goodness is exactly what every Saturday needs. And seriously, this track is my life.
Where the hell are my friends ¦ Out without me again ¦ Friday, wine, and the internet ¦ A life I wish I could forget
Foals is a Shaky Knees staple. These Oxford boys are festival jams to a T. Can’t freakin wait.
Sunday
Atlas Genius- Ponce de Leon @ 1:30pm
Sundays are my favorite days at festivals, always, and this Aussie band will get my mind right. “Trojans” was a hot play here in Louisville.
We missed Diet Cig’s last visit to Zanzabar but from our friend Rachel’s photos, it was the shit. Bandcamp tells us they are “two homies making tunes and eggs on the regz” which I feel.
Florence + The Machine- Peachtree @ 8:30pm
This is a bucket list show. SO EXCITED.
If you don’t have the ability to head down to Atlanta, the good news is many of these bands are stopping through town this week on the way to Atlanta [I.E. MMJ and Twin Limb, Ghost, Matthew Logan Vasquez] so get out and see them!
