The second show of my birthday week was The Head and the Heart at Iroquois Amphitheater. I’d been looking forward to this one for a long time because I’ve grown to really like their folky and eclectic sound, AND it was so close to my actual birthday. I think I bought the tickets within the first week they were on sale for these reasons. That being said, once again, I won us some extra tickets for friends by calling in to 91.9 WFPK so it made the night that much more fun. WFPK, my main radio station for sure, has been playing their latest album Let’s Be Still since it came out about a year ago and one thing I really enjoy about The Head and the Heart are their distinct meshing of instruments and voices. I love the harmonies that blend so well with their percussion, guitars, violin and piano (P.S. I am a huge sucker for a strong piano influence.) And thank you guys, I was not let down in these areas at this show. The last 20 minutes and the encore really made the night for me. They played a lot of their big hitters but did so organically and with emotion that really left me feeling something good at the very end. It was a refreshing way to get ready for an eventful weekend. Plus, I loved pianist Kenny Hensley’s Instagram post of our ‘firefly’ lights during “Let’s Be Still.”
